Historic Farmhouse in Slavinje

Location: Slavinje, Slovenia

Project year: 2024

Status: Concept design

We developed the concept design for the renovation of a rural farmhouse, whose oldest part dates back around 200 years. Over time, the house had been extended to its current L-shaped form, but much of it had fallen into disrepair.

The client’s wish was to revive the building, transforming it into a functional contemporary home while preserving the spirit of its historic character.

The new design provides family living spaces, two small independent apartments, a communal gathering area, as well as technical facilities for farming, food storage, and poultry keeping.

The proposal foresees the demolition and reconstruction of the later-added section, while the oldest stone-built part of the house will be preserved and structurally reinforced. The currently unused attic will be converted into living spaces and apartments. A new wooden balcony with a pergola articulates the facade, establishes a direct outdoor extension of the family’s quarters, and at the same time defines a sheltered entrance to the house.

A central wooden caesura marks the main entrance and separates the family’s private area from the communal and technical functions. Despite the partial new build, the project employs local materials and architectural forms that reference the house’s historical heritage.
