House renovation Nieuwerkerken
Location: Nieuwerkerken, Belgium
Project year: 2024
Status: Completed
Located in the Limburg region of Belgium, this renovation transformed a two-story brick house from 1994 into a contemporary yet warm family home. Designed for a young couple purchasing their first property, the project is defined by subtle interventions that enhance both comfort and clarity without erasing the home’s original character.
A restrained design strategy guided the renovation, retaining key elements while refining the overall coherence of the house. The original wooden windows and doors were replaced to improve energy efficiency. Slim black steel window profiles and a solid Afromosia front door introduce a crisp, contemporary expression that sits naturally alongside the brick façade.
Inside, the layout was optimized through the repositioning of lighting and electrical outlets to support modern living. The existing terracotta flooring was preserved, providing a warm base that is complemented by a palette of neutral finishes, black accents, and soft sage tones.
In the kitchen, open shelving and a central island enhance both functionality and atmosphere, creating a generous workspace and an informal gathering point. Quartzite countertops replace the originals, bringing lightness and a refined, contemporary finish to the space.
Personal artworks, handcrafted ceramics, and thoughtfully selected lighting complete the interior, adding texture, individuality.
